Period 4
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain  takes place in Missouri in a small town along the Mississippi River. The story begins with Aunt Polly searching for Tom. She finds him in the closet with his hands covered in jam. Tom quickly escapes over a fence only to return at dinner time. While wandering the streets Tom encounters a beautiful girl named Becky Thatcher. Tom eventually courts Becky. Tom and his best friend Huckleberry Finn go on an adventure and unexpectedly become witnesses to a murder. After being rejected by Becky, Tom decides to continue his pirate fantasy. While exploring with Huck and Joe Harper, he later learns that the townspeople think that the boys are dead after they were missing for a while. Tom ends up going to his own funeral.
